Computer Learning for Inner City Kids

Who We Are

Five Harvard graduate students founded the CLICK project as part of an assignment in their Introduction to Sustainability class, within the Sustainability and Environmental Management-SEM program in the Master of Liberal Arts program at the Harvard Kennedy School.

Mission Statement
The C.L.I.C.K project seeks to end the vicious cycle of illiteracy and poverty by providing a center available to both adults and children, dedicated to computer skill learning. With a focus on women’s education, C.L.I.C.K. hope to alleviate the poverty of Southeast D.C. through literacy and education.

We aim to sustain our efforts and activities by accepting charitable donations of laptops and iPads from the Maryland D.C. area and reselling them for a profit.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The over-arching goal of the CLICK project is
to develop a non-profit foundation that provides a computer learning center for inner city kids and their families
in the poorest neighborhood in Washington D.C.
• The center strives to :
build computer skills
• to develop other sustainability skills such as literacy, empowerment, gainful employment and valuation of women and children within the framework of the community at large.

Congress Heights school rates, illiteracy, etc.

Based out of the Congress Heights neighborhood,

•The CLICK project center will be directed, staffed and operated by the citizens of the community, and these same citizens will be expected to take over the complete task of running the CLICK center within a two-year period from date of inception.

•The CLICK center will concentrate on procuring used laptops, notebooks and iPads from individuals and businesses who are interested in receiving a tax deductable donation as well as participating in creating a more sustainable community. These computer devices will be sold on eBay or Craigslist and the funds will be used
to run the CLICK center operations.
With its focus on ending the vicious cycle of poverty as well as accentuating the role of women and children within the development of a sustainable community,
the CLICK project hopes to provide a safe, stable and fun environment for all citizens.
Project & Target Community
•Southeast Washington D.C. is the poorest and most crime-ridden area of our nation’s capital.
•Congress Heights is one of the twelve neighborhoods that make up the SE area of D.C.
According to the 2010 Census Washington D.C. has a population of 600,000 people, with 150,000 living in Southeast, with approximately 12,500 living in Congress Heights

•The original community was comprised of working class whites and stayed that way until the 1960s with the closing of the Naval Gun Factory. That event coupled with civil unrest following Martin Luther King’s assassination caused massive “white flight” into the suburbs. Almost overnight, Southeast D.C. transformed into a black neighborhood; its new residents were on the fringe of society, economically destitute, and educationally ignored.
The absolute poverty that has haunted this neighborhood for 50 years cannot be overstated. The once proud neighborhood is now riddled with drugs, crime, prostitution, unemployment, low graduation rates, low home ownership, and teenage pregnancy amongst the highest in the region.
OBJECTIVES
Organizational Objectives:
The C.L.I.C.K project seeks to improve literacy in Congress Heights, Bellevue, and Washington Highlands. Implementing this initiative will improve education, increase employment and overall reduce poverty levels. The C.L.I.C.K project also hopes to empower members of the community, invoking high self-esteem in individuals and community pride. C.L.I.C.K. will work with other literacy programs in the area to strengthen the initiative and spread awareness about illiteracy in D.C. The risk of starting C.L.I.C.K. is the potential of unreceptive response in the community. Hopefully, with tactics of promotion for the project and community events we can integrate the project into the community with little to no disruption. The benefits of the C.L.I.C.K project will distribute education throughout the community and the dispersal of this education will be the greatest of reward to not only the Congress Heights area, but the nation’s capital.
